How Many Screws Per Sheet of Metal Roofing?

Quantity is often an important consideration when installing, upgrading or otherwise working with a metal roof, and one of the most common materials where quantity is regularly considered here is within the realm of metal roof screws and other fastener types. A common question down these lines: How many screws per sheet of metal roofing should be used?

At Supply Maverick, a division of Mid Michigan Metal Sales, we're here to provide clients with a wide range of metal roofing screws and other fasteners for all your needs, including help with determining exactly how many of a given screw or fastener your job will require. While each job is slightly different and your screw requirements could vary somewhat based on individual factors, here are some common averages and basics in terms of how many screws you should be using for a single sheet of metal roofing.

Defining a Metal Roofing Sheet

Because we know there can be some different terms or definitions used by some when it comes to metal roofing, let's first define exactly what we mean by a "sheet" of metal roofing. In most cases, this refers to a single square roofing panel, which will measure 100 square feet.

It's possible to use larger or smaller panels in some cases, which will of course impact how many screws you need. But from a base perspective, you can use this as a general starting point.

Determining Raw Screw Need

When it comes to determining your need for number of metal roofing screws, the first major step will just involve some simple multiplication. This can be done in a couple of ways, which should yield the same result:

  • 80 screws per sheet: If your metal roofing sheets are indeed 100 square feet, as we noted above, you would generally require 80 screws for each sheet. This is a common average used by many roofers.
  • 80% of square footage: On the other hand, if you're not sure of each individual sheet's square footage or are working with sheets of different sizes, you'll need to calculate total screw number based on the overall square footage of the entire roof. In this case, just take the total square footage and multiply it by 80%, which should give you a fairly accurate estimation of how many screws you'll need for the whole project.

Trim and Panel Sidelap

It's important to realize, however, that you're not finished determining your screw needs even if you've calculated the above. In addition, you must consider the trim and panel sidelap – these areas will also need to be factored in when it comes to screw quantity.

For each lineal foot of trim or flashing, whichever is used in your project, it's common to use about 1-2 screws. For panel sidelap, this number goes up slightly - you'll need approximately 2-4 screws for each lineal foot of sidelap.

Additional Factors

Of course, there are other factors that may impact your screw needs as well. For example, if you're dealing with a particularly steep or high roof pitch, this may require additional screws for added security. Additionally, some contractors may opt to use more screws than the average in order to ensure maximum stability and durability over time.

Risks of Using Too Few Screws

While we understand that there can be a temptation to try and save costs by using as few screws as possible, we strongly recommend against this practice. Using too few screws can greatly increase the risk of leaks and other roofing issues, which may end up costing you far more in repairs down the line than the initial cost of a few extra screws would have.

For instance, if you use too few screws, your metal roofing may not be properly secured against high winds or heavy rain. This could lead to significant damage and potential water infiltration, which can cause rotting, mold growth, and other serious problems. Additionally, using too few screws means that each individual screw will need to bear more weight and stress than it was designed for, which could result in failure and the need for costly replacements.

Ultimately, determining exactly how many screws you'll need for your metal roofing project will depend on a variety of factors, including the size and type of your panels, any additional trim or sidelap needs, and individual contractor preferences. However, by following these general guidelines and principles, you should be well on your way to ensuring a stable, secure and long-lasting metal roof installation.
